The first year
A four week "investigation workshop" about visual design and programming provided students at the beginning of their first year in Ivrea with a basic understanding of digital media. The participants experienced a complete project cycle starting with a given topic on which to build first ideas, a concept and a final solution. This workshop was the first one in a series of introductory courses (visual design, physical computing, service design, play experiences) for the first year students.
Memory as information in motion
The course hinted at aspects of memory in science, design and art, pointing out the dynamic character of memory as we are working with a highly dynamic medium. We discussed the physical and software structures that are used to store and retrieve information with the main focus on processes involved and how to depict and use them.
From a design and a technological point of view, memory offers numerous opportunities to explore fundamental aspects of digital media as managing huge amounts of information is an important issue of our time. The task was to develop a software application for a collection of information of their choice. Their individual projects sparked off discussions about relevant issues of dynamic design, the display of information and graphical user interfaces.
