Interaction design in exhibitions

The field of interactive museum exhibits is growing and particularly fertile for interaction designers interested in designing between the real and the virtual. A two-week workshop at Interaction Design Institute Ivrea in December 2004 used Telecom Italia's Future Centre in Venice as a case study to address issues including strategy, communication, technical implementation and the design of experience.

Communication, water, memories and the future

The participating students and faculty began by visiting the Future Centre in the heart of the city near the Rialto Bridge. Seeking to blend Venetian heritage with computer and communications technology, the Centre includes a permanent exhibition of interactive installations and an internet café. We explored the building, taking photographs and sketching out first ideas. The impressions of this field study were used to start many brainstorming sessions, from which a selection of concepts was summarized in a booklet
